How to understand the Gels: 

     

The idea is very simple. If you are a taster that means you have at least one chromosome that has the palindrome that the restriction enzyme can cut intact and thus you should have smallest fragments (44 base pairs)  visible and the 177 fragment visible (middle band).  

The largest fragment (221) will be visible if at least one chromosome HAS the mutation in the palindrome region and thus the restriction enzyme could not cut the DNA. This band will identify a non-taster.
