        warm water and Universal (green) plus few drops of .1 M NaOH solution- add solid CO2 
        on overhead projector with light hole (from sunset demo)

2/26 – Tuesday Homework:

 
1.  Study for the makeup of the MO/GAP/ IMF test – I posted the key in power school.
     Sorry that video was unavailable last night.  It is now available.
 
     – It would be a very good idea to take the make-up AFTER I have reviewed the test in class and you review with me using the video posted Monday.  It is time to eliminate repeated mistakes on the same concepts. Pay attention to how I reviewed to explain solubilities and boiling points! I will grade that section a bit tougher in the make-up test. Remember that it will be the best grade out of 2 tests.
 
2: Please start the formal lab of the TLC of Universal indicator Lab using the google doc that I sent you.
3:  You should have the hypothesis background, and procedure completed in the google presentation.
 
Tonight you should complete the following individually:   
 
 Please complete Background and Hypothesis
1: Background:  Explain how TLC works and the concepts behind the technique. Specifically how the TLC with the type of TLC plate and solvent used in this lab.
 
TLC plate :  Silcia
Solvent 2 : 1 ratio of ethyl acetate to hexanes.
 
ALSO determine the RELATIVE polarity of the three components of the mixture called Universal Indicator.
Use the images from my presentation and include them into your background. Discuss their individual IMF’s based on the diagrams.
 
2: Hypothesis:   Predict the relative polarity of the three molecular compounds in the Universal Indicator mixture and the Rf (rate of flow = distance traveled on plate from initial position).
 

2/27 – Wednesday – period 2/3 – 

 
1. discussion of how acetone can “dissolve” styrofoam.
     – reason why ethyl acetate can be dissolved in hexanes
 
            Does like really dissolve like?

      – calculation of Rf values through Logger pro

1:  Work on the TLC of Universal Indicator Lab.  Lab is due next Monday, March 4th.
       – you need to add the following components:
 
      Period 2/3 has all the data:
      Period 4 will need to gather data as a group tomorrow:
 
         Procedure/materials
 
        Data  (picture of chromatograph) with measurements. identify the different chemical indicators.
                      data tables, Rf (Rate of Flow) values
 
        Results
 
        Conclusion – discussion that uses data to determine the relative polarity of each chemical indicator that is in the mixture called Universal Indicator.  Using diagrams of the molecular structure determine what part of the structure may have been responsible for the outcome on the chromatograph.  Make sure you are discussing the IMF throughout and solubility. Tie in your background to help with this discussion.
