SUMMER INSTITUTE – Module 2 – Classification of Matter
3 total Hours (no Labs!) – due Sunday 7/12 –
**Connection – We have done 2 labs to practice our measuring and calculation skills with numbers that come from measurement. In these two labs we were dealing with different forms of matter. They are all chemicals as every type of matter (something that takes up space) is made up of different atoms (lab 1) or different arrangement of atoms (lab 2). The classification of these chemicals is an important part of understanding of why certain chemical behave differently (have different properties).

Activity 1: SKILL : Physical vs Chemical Changes and Properties
Notes: page 11, 13.
1: Watch lecture 1.6 below and complete the backside of the worksheet (side with word bank) as directed by me in the video. (Please leave the front side of the worksheet for a later time)
2: Review with a key below
Sorry this was not posted correctly..
Lecture 1.6 = Chemical vs. Physical Change (also starring Physical intensive and Physical extensive properties)
Activity 2: SKILL : Classify Matter either as Homogeneous Mixture, Heterogeneous Mixture, Substance; compound or element.
Notes: page 12, 13, 14, & 15.
1. Please view Lecture 1.7 – Classification of matter and fill out the frontside of the worksheet (flowchart) with me in the lecture.
2. Complete the backside of the worksheet (with the shapes) below and review with key.
3. Please watch the demonstration below that will give you real life example of what I am teaching here.
Sorry originally this did not have the second page.
Lecture 1.7
Propane and Hydrogen Bubble Demo:
Activity 3: SKILL : Classification of Matter Activity Reinforcer – Models 1
(using models which in this case are NUTs and Bolts)
Notes: page 11, 12, & 13
1: Watch the Nuts Bolts Washers classification video and when asked to please classify below in the form below that will be an immediate feedback form. Carefully use the multiple choice list below to make your choices of classification.
Bolts/nuts/washers classification- There are 10 questions so please SCROLL!
Activity 4: SKILL : Classification of Matter Activity Reinforcer – Models 2
Notes: page 11, 12, & 13 (using models which in this case Student Diagrams)
1: Please View Lecture 1.8 – Diatomic Elements and Monoatomic Elements
2. Using the whiteboards of matter (atoms, molecules, mixtures) that my past students have done fill in the form. You will be classifying these models of matter in the form.
Lecture 1.8 :
Student Whiteboards: to move to next whiteboard please click on the arrow on the upper right side of this gadget. You can also zoom in and out. If you are having trouble viewing please refresh browser.
Please scroll down in the form so you can still view the whiteboards above.
For those that are still having problems with classifying diagrams I have posted a key of the first 6 whiteboards for your review.
In Diagram 6: I have 2 elements classified when it should be 3. Thanks Emma Strebel
Activity 5: SKILL : Classification of Matter Activity – Using Real Chemicals
Notes: page 11, 12, & 13 Elements, Compounds, Mixtures, OH My Activity
1: Please Classify the Real Chemicals using the worksheet below and by playing the
Elements, Compounds, Mixtures, OH My Activity playlist below, table by table.
Compounds Mixtures Oh My packet.pdf
Use the Packet above to classify the chemicals in the video playlist below. The 1st page of the packet is the worksheet you will use to classify. Each video below has a Table with chemicals to classify and YOU MUST USE THE PAGE IN THE PACKET THAT MATCHES the video for each table to make sense of the activity.
-Each Table has three chemicals, the third is a result of physical or chemical change of the first 2.
a) Click on the following icon in the playlist below to view each table (please go in order) or just hit play:

There is no audio to these videos.
2. Once you are done classifying please compare and contrast Mixtures vs. Compounds

3: Review with the key:
Activity 6: SKILL : Classification of Matter Activity – Using Real Chemicals written in formulas
Notes: page 11, 12, & 13
1: Please view the Lecture 1.9 below and complete the worksheet below and the challenge question:
2: Review with key.
