” The first day of class should connect to the last day and every day in between!”
Refresh this page every time you arrive! This page changes and sometimes many times in the same day. Its a fluid site. I post what I think we will do and then repost what we accomplish. Homework posted is to be done at home and not completed days ahead of time. What is posted ahead is subject to change and may not be updated. There is a sequence that needs to be followed.

*You do not need to anything with your graph tonight.
1. Answer questions to the Ant Research Article – I am giving you a research article to read and interpret. Please try your best to answer the first 6 questions. The skill of interpreting biology research is the skill that I want to develop for you and one that you need for this course. Think what the dependent and independent variable are!

9/15 – Tuesday – B Day – 4 , 7
a) Research Ant Article analysis. (Be able to identify the IV DV and hypothesis of an authentic article.)
b) Continue with Fast Plant data collection for Height, and phenotypes.
c) To identify a positive and negative control in experimental designs.

Remember the box plots are just middle 50’s which just mean 50 percent of the middle of the Normal Distribution of values with the Median in the middle. They call these box plots IQR’s (Inter Quartile Range’s) . The whiskers do not include the outliers BUT show how the data skews toward one direction AND WE DO NOT use the outliers (or whiskers) to see if they overlap!!! I am an outlier (+2 or more SD from the mean in height) and you would not judge or make any statistical judgements on my height FOR the entire population. Example: How does the airline industry determine the size of seats and the distance between them? Would they use the my height to make these determinations? We care about the population around the norm (mean or median) and we care about the majority of the ants are doing and not the outliers. So we look to see if the boxes overlap or not for a determination of significance.

a) To complete the Graph of Lab 2 in Excel.
b) To practice analyzing the data from lab 2 and begin the conclusion.
We are measuring the heights of our Fast plants grown in different brightness to see if there is a statistical difference using the Standard Error of the mean.
1. Continue and complete the graph for Lab 2 in Excel.
2. Begin to analyze our data and write a conclusion.
a) Phenotype check for Lab 1
b) Day 7 – Height data collected/ count the control
c) Control for % germination.

1. Complete the Chi- Squared form below.
2. Complete the Conclusion in lab 2 – % Germination of fast plants and Brightness of light, in your lab notebook.
Requirements:
1. Title
2. Question
3. Hypothesis
4. Prodedure
5. Data section:
a) Data Table
b) Graph
6. Conclusion –
a) First paragraph – How much support did the data provide towards your hypothesis? What does your data suggest in terms of significance or general trends?
b) Second paragraph – What’s your Leap? What is the data suggesting about the biology of the fast plant seeds. Make a leap from the data to what it means in terms of organisms alleles and genetics. This paragraph is conjecture but it needs to be logical.
c) Third paragraph – What errors may have muddied the water or your outcomes? What part of the expirimental design may have affected your outcome. Describe the experiment would you follow up with given the outcomes in this current experiment.
