b) To Review the Peppered Moths Critical Thinking Form.

Period  4, 7:

1.  Review of Chi-sqaured Form 2

Day 13 – Fast Plants

2.  FLOWERS!! – *pollinate our FAST PLANTS – Lab 1

a) Evolution basics —-> Angiosperms and pollinators = Coevolution

pollinate Fast Plants/marble notes on reproductive parts of a flower/seeds

– Note taking on the sexual organs of the plant.

– Dihybrid Cross – same phenotype with the same phenotype

– Test cross – homozygous recessive individuals DO NOT provide pollen to any green leaf/purple stem plant!

*We kept the Test Cross Plants separate so that we did not contaminate our dihybrid cross.  Everyone pollinated all test groups EXCEPT the true breeders that we will use for the test cross.

 * Keep the Test Cross Group away FROM BOTH CLASSES!

Notes for the Lab will come from the following presentation:

9/23 – Wednesday – A Day – 4/5A ,7/8A

Main focus –
 a) To construct a graph using excel for Lab 3 using the entire class’s data of Heights
We will complete our class graph from the height data.  We will adjust the Y – axis to better view the trends in the data.
We will add custom error bars and customize the graph.

Data for both classes on day 6, 7, 8, and day 10 heights – Google sheet link:

b) To collect another dependent variable from our test groups and make a bar graph                  between test groups.

We will add another independent variable to the lab by counting leaves, buds or flowers.  We will add these values in the              Google sheet that we used for the height data.

c) Pollinate our Fast Plants – (2nd Round!)

                                                                                                                                                                                              Period  4,5(A), 7/8(A):

___________                                                                                                                   Evolution NOTES – Basics:

Individuals do not evolve!!  Populations due by shifting the “normal distribution” toward individuals that have the greatest reproductive fitness = THEY LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO REPRODUCE MORE and pass on their alleles to the next generation.  This increased reproductive fitness is due to the SELECTIVE PRESSURE that the CHANGE provides!

IF there is not already an allele present THAT WILL HELP in the NEW ENVIRONMENTAL Conditions (Change) THERE WILL BE No EVOLUTION. This means that if an allele is not already present in low frequency BEFORE the change THERE WILL BE NO SELECTIVE PRESSURE for any allele and the population will suffer and eventually become extinct.

NOTICE that SEXUAL REPRODUCTION increases Genetic Diversity so much more than ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION does and thus produces more various alleles.  This variety of alleles creates the ABILITY for species to have a better chance to Evolve or survive NEW Changes in the environment.  How many current advanced species are alive today that undergo asexual reproduction?  Not many why?  Could we as humans evolved into the extremely complicated life form we are now if we did not sexual reproduce?
Asexual Reproducers ONLY get get variety when a mutation occurs while sexual reproduction Amplifies the diversity (from a mutation) by segregating chromosomes randomly, crossover, and random fertilization.

ALL Evolution however starts with a mutation or a Random change of code in our DNA that creates new proteins that can stop current chemical reactions (recessive) OR START NEW REACTIONS (that make new alleles!!!) BUT that does not mean that evolution always occurs because of a mutation (broken gene). Evolution can occur by changing the frequency of certain alleles in a population.

9/25 – Weekend’s Homework: –

1. Please begin your write-up of Lab 3 by writing the completing the following components with a shared Google Doc that has been sent to you in your private gmail:

*Use your lab notebook and the Data tables and Graph made Monday.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 1.  Title page
2.  Background
3.  Question
4.  Hypothesis
5.  Materials
6.  Procedure
7.  Data   – Please complete your 2 graphs using the excel file downloaded Friday. You can make a another copy from the file that was downloaded to make the second graph. Carefully pick the 2 sets of data using the Links to each test group that are posted above. Re-populate the data below the data table and your graphs should be almost complete.  Give each graph a title and label the x and y axis.  Change the legend by renaming each series.

HERE IS A LINK to an example of a lab writeup from a student from a previous years class:LINK                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Please add a Title page, Background, Question, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure, Data sections to your Lab to the shared doc for Lab 2 that I will send you today.

BACKGROUND:– Your background is like a literary review of the topic in a published study. I am not asking you to write a term paper but I am asking you to write an essay on the ANYTHING that is remotely related to this investigation.  Develop your Background so that your discussion eventually LEADS to a Question that you will test with your Hypothesis.  I know this is open ended but this is how you make this lab your own.  Do make this a cohesive piece of writing and you may probably need to investigate this information.  At the end of the lab I will ask for your resources, so make note of where you are gathering information. DO NOT MAKE THIS a bunch of unrelated ideas or facts.  I gave an example above from a past students of mine so take a look to get a feel of what I am asking. This part of your lab should be 1 page single spaced.

Question: What are the you investigating?  This is written right after your Background.

Hypothesis: Please re-write your hypothesis from your lab notebook. Use the basic format: If the Independent variable does this…the dependent variable will do this.
Procedure: Write your procedure in a numbered fashion to explain the steps taken to perform the lab. Can someone follow you steps if they nothing about your lab initially?
 DATA:
Please add the data tables from your excel file that we completed in class this week.   Take screen shots of the data tables and the Graph. You can make your graph more personalized if you want.

DATA TABLE:
OK so I want you to create a Nifty Data Table that represents your calculated data from YOUR RAW data.
I do not need to see every piece of data that you are using in your table.  You should be presenting the overall calculated values FROM your raw data (from marbles).  For instance If you have a tested a group and a control you should at least have an average, standard deviation, SEM and SEM +2/- 2 values for each group.  THESE ARE THE VALUES YOU ARE GOING TO USE FOR YOUR GRAPH!  You are required to use EXCEL to make this data Table.  We made this already together so Just cut and paste these tables from your excel file.
GRAPHS:
Please create an appropriate graph from data table that illustrates the significance or insignificance of your data calculated the best in Excel  Based on your study a line graph may be better than a bar graph, especially if you are measuring rate (how fast).  These graph must have error bars unless you are doing a Chi- squared statistic. WE CREATED THIS ALREADY!!!

Graphs must be labeled in each axis, have a title, and clearly illustrate outcomes, significant or not.  The graph should be a clear representation of your outcomes.  Presentation is key!!!!

Annotation in the Google Doc:
You need to make an annotation under each image that you bring into your google doc. For instance, you might write Table 1 under the Data Table or give it a formal name. This is so that when you write the Conclusion you can refer to the table appropriately.  “In table 1, or in figure 1 we see that ….”

2. Please watch the video on the Galapagos Finches first and then complete the form. You have 3 graded submissions tonight.  This Form is way to review for MondaYs’  quiz.

3. STUDY FOR STATISTICS QUIZ Monday:  You will BE able to use your graphing calculators.
 – AS long as you show work!! mean, Sd, SEM, Chi squared, Independent variable, Dependent Variable, Hypothesis,
